About the role

The role involves laying bricks and blocks, setting out, mixing mortar, using hand tools and checking levels to create quality work to specification. Bricklayers work outdoors with site teams, following strict health, safety and sustainability standards, with strong demand across the industry. As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff. The apprenticeship is for 2 years and requires GCSEs in English and Maths at grade 4/C or above. Functional Skills at Level 2 in Maths and/or English are accepted if GCSEs are not met. Essential skills include communication, attention to detail, organisation, customer care, problem-solving, logical thinking, teamwork, creativity, initiative, and patience. The employer, F. Spooner & Sons, is a family-run builder with over 85 years of experience, known for professionalism and reliability. They are members of the NHBC and NFB. Training will be provided by Stoke-on-Trent College, requiring day release one day per week. Being comfortable working at height and having a good attitude to work are important.

Entry requirements

  • GCSE English and Maths at grade 4/C or above. Functional Skills Level 2 in Maths and/or English are accepted.
